Subterranean By Design... ---Week Off--- 2004-05-16 - 11:39 p.m. So the semester ended last Friday, and I am just ending my week off. Tomorrow I start my student teaching for the summer...Multivariable Calculus once again. I have thirteen signed up for my class, and that will go down by a couple if things happen like they did last summer. The week has been just what I needed. I got to do a little bit of everything. Last weekend I went back to Ske-Town for Mother's Day. I got into town on Saturday (after watering Lia's flowers) and had dinner at Tatra Hall. Mmmm steak fry... Mother's Day was good times. After Mass we went to see Mim, where mom beat Mim and I in a game of cribbage. It was good to play cribbage with Mim, as I spend significantly less time with her than I do with Nether. I guess that's ok though, as Mim has over 40 grandchildren, and Nether has only four. We went to my aunt and uncle's for dinner, where I met Lisa's boyfriend Robbie. He seemed like a good guy, and he plays baseball for Muskegon Community College, so he got an A+ rating from me (not that that really matters). Driving back to Lansing was quite a challenge, as it downpoured most of the way. But I had mad driving skills, and made it back. I saw one person who had spun way off the road and was faced the wrong way. It made me consider the necessity of a cell phone, but I quickly defeated that notion. Early week consisted of a lot of laziness. I did do some studying with Ahmet for the analysis qual, but other than that I loafed. I needed it, as finals week was actually about eight days of work, and I was pretty worn out. On Thursday, a crew of us (Kevin, Matt Powers, Andy, Joerg, Mary, and Megan) trekked it down to Detroit for the Tigers/A's game. Matt Weiland and Aaron Turner were supposed to meet us there, but by 1:45 they were still AWOL, so I had to eat the cost of their tickets (which I had purchased so they could sit next to us) and also missed all three of the runs that the Tigers scored. They won the game, 3-1, and it took just over two hours. So I missed all of the scoring and almost half of the game. Still, it was a good time. We hit an Irish bar after the game, and then had dinner at a restaurant in Greektown. I lost my sunglasses, but they were scratched and old, so maybe it was a sign that I should get new ones. We got back to EL around 8PM, and after about an hour of resting, we went to Maggy's for an uneventful end of the evening. On Friday night, I went down to the Dale (again, after watering Lia's flowers) and spent the night at Anthony's. In the morning, Dallas got into town, and we had lunch at Cottage Inn. D and I then went to Cambria for the wedding of Jeanna Miller and Tyler Watts. It was a nice ceremony, and the reception was lots of fun. The Hillsdale Jazz combo played at the reception, so I got to see Chris McCoury, Eric Jones, Dr. Miller, and a couple of Dale acquaintences through that. Michelle Phillips and Brittany were both in the wedding, so I got to spend some time with them. Also around were Will Hill, Amber Briggs, Amanda McGregor, Michelle Steffen (as in Bill Steffen), and Ninette Forbes (I think it's Forbes). We hung out at a post-reception party for a while, and then I was on my way. Oh yes, and Dallas, Anthony, and I got in a little bit of Mario Kart, bringing back the days of freshman year with Houser and Guagenti. There were some good laughs as we struggled to stay on course. Got back into town pretty late. Crashed. Today I went to Mass and then watched the Tigers beat the Rangers, 3-1. I was supposed to meet Ahmet for some studying tonight, but I think that he stiffed me. I hope that this doesn't become a trend. Kevin and I went to Maggy's to watch the Piston's game, which had a happy ending for the first time in a while. I notice that I get caught up in the NBA playoffs when I'm watching a game, but if the Pistons lose, it's like water off a duck's back to me. That's good...too bad that I'm more attached to baseball, where the Tigers consistently lose over 80 games a season. But I've learned to cope with that as well. So the summer job starts tomorrow. I have all of my old lecture notes, but I don't want to get complacent and show up unprepared. I'm sure it will happen some time and that's how I will learn my lesson. Oh well, the students shouldn't be too mad. I'm a pretty good guy in the classroom. I heard on the radio today about how the guy from Pennsylvania was decapitated. This was no samurai sword, Kill Bill decapitation. Apparently, it took about 45 seconds to do the job, and the A-Rabs were performing the act "enthusiastically." The dabate was whether or not this should be shown on TV. Hmmm, I'm not sure if a decapitation of any kind should be shown on TV, but I think that people should be shown images of this stuff. They showed images of that prison scandal, and everyone is like "American soldiers bad..." so wouldn't it be fair to show the enemy in their despicable nature? Sounds logical to me. Now, the proper medium to do this in is not such an elementary question. I'm sure one could find it on the internet. --- Song Currently on WinAmp: "You're All I've Got Tonight" by The Cars. The Cars are a solid solid band. The first Cars fan that I met (besides myself, of course) was Mike J. (also known as Chach) of the Hilly D. Mike was quite a unique character from California. He had once dated Henry Winkler's daughter, and had pictures of himself with "The Fonz." The guy was a trip, but he quickly moved to an off campus house and I saw little of him the rest of my years there. He was also one of the guys that was in my Shtromas politics class. In that class, misery loved company.
