Toyah ---Tecmo Super Bowl XV---
2005-12-11 - 9:27 p.m.
Tecmo continues at Hillsdale. Here are the results of the latest Super Bowl, completed on the eleventh of December. They say it was the fifteenth Super Bowl, but I would guess that there have been more of them. --- Submitted by Commissioner Garrett Wood: No one thought it could be done, everyone doubted, and for that F you guys. But after massive skipping of those without a shot, and few of those who did, Tecmo Season 15 is over. Now then, I've got a Playoffs story to tell. To everyone who came to watch, you guys rock, to everyone who couldn't be there, I hope this gives you your Tecmo fix, and to those of you who were in Tecmo and didn't come watch, you're fools. Game 1: Bengals (Garrett) vs Broncos (Schoonover) I don't know what all to say about this game, I won, it was unspectacular. Scratch that. There was a bit of dirtiness involving me kicking off to Schoonover, him fumbling it at the 5 yard line and me scoring off it. It wasn't a dirty game overall, but things weren't going well for the Broncos right from the start. Those were my first 7 points in my eventual 31-7 victory. Game 2: Eagles (Travis) vs Lions (Hugger) This game sucked the energy out of the room all in the first quarter. How does an 0-0 first quarter suck energy you ask? Simple, 4 fumbles and an interception usually comming after some hard fought drive. Those fumbles were also right at Detroit's 10 yard line. Despite all the madness and yelling though, not a single point. Those didn't come till later, and what we had was a very close game. Travis and Hugger matched each other for touchdowns, but it would be Hugger's two field goals that would propel him to a 20-14 victory. Game 3: Colts (Wayne) vs Chargers (Israel) Very entertaining game. We may have lost Victor who's playoff demeanor was calm, resilient and utterly focussed, but we've got something quite like him in Israel who never looked away from the game, never acknowledged Wayne's taunts or the crowd's cheers. Butts was injured, and with him the Charger's offense and that would seem apparent from the final score of 21-7 Colts. But the score is misleading. Most of that game was a series of hard fought and well executed offenses on both sides, but in the hands of a (admittedly talented) rookie the Charger's offense is more one dimensional and Wayne's seasons of expierence and refinement proved to be an effective defense. It was successful passes to Hester and well timed uses of Ivy Joe Hunter that got Wayne into the endzone, but it was a committed defense that won him the game. Game 4: Bears (Nathan) vs Rams (Kevin) I'll tell you what, be it pride for my former room-mate or some deeper, latent Fruedian urge, it was good to see Nathan finally make the playoffs. At first glance this would be an interesting game, superb run game vs superb pass game. What tips the balance, though, is da Bear's defensive prowess. Both teams incorporated the weaker elements of their offenses into their overall game, but you can only bomb it long so many times before Singeltary takes a hint. That hint came late while the game was still tied 14-14, but it produced a stop which led to a successful drive which led to the game winning 21-14, Bears. Game 5: Oilers (Colin) vs Bengals (Garrett)
To anyone with a receptions rating of 88 or higher, I respect and fear you. Specifically I talking about Heywood Jeffries here. Single coverage? Double coverage? Triple Coverage? A called F'ing play? It doesn't matter to someone who apparently owns the football being used in the game, so I let him have it. Colin learned early on that the Bengals have enough defenders in the right places that his run game wasn't going to cut it, Drew Hill or not, so his fantastic drives were the result the pass game for which the Oilers are known. Weird thing is, Moon and Jeffries were all up in my defensizzle except for when Jeffries was in the endzone. Call it Justice, a screwjob, Fate or whatever else but that meant that Colin was always close but just couldn't consistently score. That put me in the position of driving from my own 10 a lot of the time but; Esiason, Brooks, McGee and Brown were up for and I alternated between their strengths several times before I ended this match-up 21-7. Game 6: 49'ers (Lindstrom) vs Lions (Hugger) Two Tecmo veterans up to bat here, one of them a very familiar face in the playoffs. I'm talking about Hugger of course, who brought his years of experience and a certain fresh-from-the-hospital Barry Sanders to this game. Now, were all in the middle of our pizza dinners when this game went, so our energies were elsewhere, but even if we hadn't been eating I doubt things would've gotten much more electrifying. Something about the 9'ers passing there way to a 30-7 win just gets you down, no offense Lindstrom, but nobody likes to see Jerry Rice do that thing he does. Game 7: Colts (Wayne) vs Bills (Schlegel) Ah, the Colts progressing further and further into the playoffs. A cool thing to behold since it means somebody knows what they're doing. Its also the kind of thing you don't get excited about because it means you're likely about to view skill trounced by a much better team. Now I'll be the first to give Schlegel some credit as a decent Tecmo player, but come on, its Wayne. Now this started out as a close game, 7-7 for quite some time with great weaving and passing and such. But then the Bills start putting on pressure like only a high ranked team can. 7-7 became 7-14 and inched closer to 7-21. So Wayne did what any of us would have done, try and close the gap with gutsy and risky plays. Sometimes it work sometimes it doesn't. 7-21 Bills. game 8: Redskins (TJ) vs Bears (Nathan) Now I rank TJ a good deal higher than Nathan in terms of player level, but after this game I'm readjusting that evaluation. You know what this game was? It was a "Ronchy score-fest" as Colin put it, and the score reflects that. Now, that doesn't mean that some great D wasn't played, oh no. TJ has developed the ability to destroy most run plays with his left end over the course of the season, and Michael Mann was indeed a thorn in the side of the Bears, but when Anderson got out it was a big deal. Nathan did fall back on his pass game a lot though, and with a good deal of success. TJ brought out his pass game too (Rypen vs Harbough, haha, delightful) and Singeltary was forced to dart about trying to cover the many excellent Redskins receivers. In fact, perhaps the thing that would prop the Redskins 35-28 victory was a certain Rypen in excellent. That's not fair to TJ who really is great at this game, but it made a difference. Game 9: Bengals (Garrett) vs Bills (Schlegel) So close. Not at the start mind you. I took a 21-7 lead pretty early. Schlegel caught up though, a pass to Andre freaking Reed here, a break-out by Thurman Thomas there and pretty soon we were tied. Actually, he pulled ahead, 21-28 in the fourth. It took me several nerve-racking 4th down calls to get to his 10 yard line, and it was on another 4th down that Boomer Esianson found Tim McGee on the 1 yard line, open and hungry for 6 points, and indeed glory. Add another extra point and its off to overtime with us. Thumbs up, the coin flips, and the ball goes to Schlegel. He drove and drove and drove until he was on my 25 and it was moment of truth time. He called the one back run down (3rd slot) and I had the choice of either bringing Francis down through the line and stopping him at a few yards posession which he had enough downs to follow up on or I could try and bring in Fulcher, bump somebody off the line and tackle him for almost no gain (a trick Schlegel himself had taught me just last night). I went with Fulcher, who got flattened. It was smooth sailing for Thomas all the way into the endzone for a 28-34 Bills win. Game 10: Redskins (TJ) vs 49'ers (Lindstrom) You guys know by now what kind of player TJ is, and you also know what the 9'ers are capable of. What did that mean for this game? Redskins score, 9'ers score, Redskins score, 9'ers score, so on and so forth. Now what that really means is something more serious, 4th quarter no time tied score of 28-28 last play of the game serious. TJ just so happens to have the ball on his 10 or so, and he wisely calls a pass play and prepares for a last-ditch long bomb. He fades back, buying himself time while dodging Lindstrom's defense which is starting to close in. Rypen starts to throw the ball when he is dive-tackled by a 49'er, for a safety. Time's up, 9'ers move on 28-30. Game 11: 49'ers (Lindstrom) vs Bills (Schlegel) This we will refer to as the "Screw-boll". 9'ers and Bills duke it out for the title...hurray. It was close-ish to begin with, but that didn't last as Schlegel pulled out successful drive after successful drive. The game ends with a score of 14-28 Bills. Pass to Rice , Pass to Reed, pass to Rice...yippee. Well congrats to Schlegel and his 2nd Super Bowl victory and congrats to everyone who made it, especially the two freshmen. Now Schlegel, lets see you make it to the playoffs with a crappy team for once. Commish
