---My Battle with a Can of Stew---

2003-11-20 - 12:19 a.m.

Today was an ok day. I really was kind of down the entire day, but nothing too awful happened, and I was able to make it through. Still, now at the end of the day I have a feeling of just enjoying the fact that this day is done. It's not really good to think that way, I suppose. Hopefully, every day will contribute positively to your life somehow, and today offered nothing of the sort. It was a normal Wednesday. I guess I can take heart in the fact that I received a 9.75 out of 10 on my analysis homework. A big boost it was, as I will be satisfied to score in the 70's on Friday's exam.

The most eventful thing today was my experience at lunch. I decided to bring some canned stew, but neglected to also bring a can opener. I went to the common room on the second floor and tried to use that opener (a real ghetto one with the key handle) but it broke after a few seconds. Well I didn't want to not eat, and I felt that it would be ridiculous to have brought my lunch and then have to eat at the IC (International Center). So I took the bottle opener end of the now broken can opener, and punched a hole in the top of the can. I had to pound on it for a while, but the hole materialized. This is where the can started to fight back. I tried, then, to pry enough of the lid away so that I could get the stew out. I swear, I knew I was going to hurt myself, but I convinced myself to give it a go. Well at one point I slipped and I ran my right hand over the jagged edges of the can lid. I sliced my thumb, index finger, and just under the webbing between my fourth and fifth fingers. The last wound was the worst, and I had to stand there and put pressure on it for what seemed like forever, while the can of stew remained partially open, sitting smugly on the counter. Eventually, I took the can back down to my office and finished the job, but it was a battle. I had to pound on the lid much more, and do some careful prying with the "can opener" (which I promptly threw in the trash when I was finished with it). I don't think I've ever worked so hard or paid a higher physical price just for lunch. My right hand looks like I got in a "Beat It" fight. From now on it's all sandwiches for me.

Lots in the news lately. Bush is over in England and is being treated very well by his allies. I found it funny that Tony Blair expressed all of England's gratitude, as if all Brits are big Bush fans. Bush made a funny quip about how David Blaine was treated the first couple of days and that there were probably some people who would want to have Bush in the same position. He seemed to be in good spirits about it.

Good reads lately on Phil and Anthony's pages. See the Links to check them out.

Finally I can get a good night's sleep. Time to get started on that.

Song Currently on WinAmp: "Walking Contradiction" by Green Day. I got hooked on this song because I liked the video. Yes, MTV played a video once. There's all this weird stuff happening around the band as they walk through the city and they are totally oblivious. Green Day is a band that I initially liked, then didn't like as I thought they were too trendy (what a snob), but then I grew to like quite a bit. They are enjoyable.
