Subterranean By Design... ---First Impressions--- 2003-11-10 - 12:25 a.m. You can't judge a book by its cover. That is about as true as statements get. In the last five or six years, I have come across five individuals who have reminded me that there is a lot more to a person than what you make them out to be in the first five minutes... Example One: Shep Shep was a crazy cat who was all about opening his mouth and hanging out with a bunch of people who would laugh at any attempt at humor. Well I couldn't stand the man for quite a while. He would get his picture in various publications, and even used to advertise his IM football games with fliers on campus. By senior year, I had gotten to know him a little better, and he even played on the Job Squad (my IM basketball team). He was a pretty cool guy, and my days of making statements like "fucking Shep" were over. Example Two: The Big D My first day of science class at Hillsdale, there was this loudmouth, annoying blonde kid who kept making under-the-breath comments about the teacher. I was trying to pay attention, but he wouldn't stop running his mouth. I soon learned that this fellow was living on the same floor as me in Galloway! I was not happy. But the man turned out to be one of my closest friends from college, Dallas Senters. By the way, he's still annoying. Example Three: Junior Nate Sato was one of those guys that sets up shop in the highest traffic area of college and remains a fixture there...all the time. I always looked down on this as silly (and I guess I still do). This guy got the nickname "Junior" as in Chris Pastor junior. That made me leery of him, to say the least, and hearing him talk in passing also turned me off. When I finally got to know him, though, I learned he was a really nice guy and pretty funny if you actually talked to him for a while. Example Four: Jason Bryan Who at Hillsdale did like this guy on the first encounter? Certainly not myself, and I consider him a buddy now. JB is one of those guys who has an opinion about everything and lets you know about it. He can come off as pretty annoying, but damn is he funny if you get him going. Example Five: Victor Victor is a fellow grad who I took undergradute Analysis with last year. He is one of the guys that sits front and center. Not only does he ask questions, but he'll have a conversation with the teacher about the subject...something that I find very annoying. Now we are in the same class together and he is a good guy. The common thread here is that there are five guys that I initially looked at and thought "man I'll never like that person." You never know who are going to be the cool ones and who are going to be the dudes. Anyway... A good weekend. Lots of good times. Bowling on Friday night, dinner and the symphony on Saturday, and Analysis on Sunday...ok, maybe I could have done without the crap on Sunday, but Sunday started well. Derek Muller got engaged on Saturday night, further perpetuating the Hillsdale legacy of getting engaged/married while still in college. I'm not saying it isn't right for anybody, but it isn't right for me. Derek and Emily are the kind of people that will be married for their entire lives, I can already see that. In that case, I think it's great that they're tying the knot. The people that get married early like that, they are a real look at what the institution of marriage used to be. Except their marriages aren't fixed. But they last, and that is something that I am hoping for in my life. Time for bed. Next week shouldn't be too bad. But I'll have a late assignment to turn in. Ugh. Song currently on WinAmp: Rain on the Scarecrow, by John Mellencamp. A solid tune by JCM about the demise of the average American farmer. If you're fron the midwest then I think it's required that you are a John Mellencamp fan.
