Subterranean By Design... ---Footloose--- 2003-11-15 - 12:20 p.m. Ahhh, Saturday morning. Er, afternoon now, I guess. It's nice to wake up on a weekend day and just be able to be lazy. Wait a second, I've been cleaning all morning! Well, it's been nice to be in the house for a while. The parents are coming for a visit, so that demanded a quick pick up. Last night I went, with Lia, to see Footloose at Holt High School. First off, I don't think that I can ever really enjoy another high school production. Being in ten at MCC, I have this bias that nobody else's show can be as good as ours. There were some things at this show that re-enforced those biases. I don't think a show can be faulted for bad actors or singers. Sometimes the director will make a mistake and put a kid in a role they can't handle. It's the little things that make the difference between what old arch nemesis and director, Bob Sullivan, called a "great high school show" and a "great show in a high school." There were certain times where the characters would exit "stage" through the auditorium doors, which was really distracting. At curtain call, someone's mom ran up on stage and put flowers down at her kid's feet. The chorus came out in threes and fours to take their bows (in our shows it was male chump chorus, female chump chorus, male upscale chorus, female upscale chorus, so you were usually with about 10 people). That made curtain call extremely long. Then at the end, one of the characters motioned for the crowd to stand up. I didn't really feel like giving this show a "standing O" in the first place, but when you start asking for one, you seal your fate. Lastly, there was a lot of goofing off during the curtain call. I remember the one time I did something goofy at curtain call I got bitched at by Sullivan and was banned from curtain call the next performance. I was pissed off about it, but I see why he was so against it. In theater, it's all about making people believe you are the character, and not some punk. When you break character, even at curtain call, it breaks the aura. Other things about the show... most of the leads were pretty good, except the girl that had to play Rusty (Chris Penn's girlfriend). My view of the song "Let's Hear it For the Boy" is forever tainted. The chorus was kind of weak, but the theater was pretty spectacular and they made pretty good use of it (except, of course, the door exit). It was something different and nice. --- Went to the doctor today. I had a knee problem, so he is sending me to an orthopedic guy. I could have done that myself, and saved some money. Oh well, appointment is in two weeks. I hate rush hour traffic. When it takes me 15 minutes to get from my place to 127, there's something wrong. Well, I had better pick up the room for the folks. Song Currently On WinAmp: "Hella Good" by No Doubt. This song has a nice beat to it, and is ideal for shaking your booty on the dance floor.
