Subterranean By Design... ---Automatic Starter--- 2003-11-19 - 1:01 a.m. Polybius stated that monarchy degrades into tyranny, aristocracy degrades into oligarchy, and democracy degrades into mob rule. O'Toole now postulates that a free society will degrade into an amoral society. Any comments on that? Agree or disagree? Send some thoughts in my direction. --- Tuesday's gone with the rain. It rained and rained and rained. Not that I don't appreciate the rain. Sometimes I try and imagine not having any of the technology that is unique to, say, the last 200 years and I can't do it. Years ago, a day like today might have been a blessing (even though it is November) but today it's normally considered a mild annoyance. OK, this is going nowhere. On to the events of the day. I tried to get up at 7:30, but it was a no go and I rolled out of the sack at 8:30. I got some studying done, but got into Wells a little after 1PM, and had to make Ahmet wait while I got lunch. Then I had to eat it while he was doing his section of the teaching. I felt pretty inconsiderate, but he didn't seem to mind. We only got through five sections, but we were both pretty tired and agreed to call it a day. I drove to Holt and met up with Lia, her mom, and one of her friends. We went out to eat and then had dessert at Sweet Mike's (second time in three days...I'm done with that for a while). Watched Jeopardy and cursed myself for not getting final. Watched the beginning of O'Reilly and then the first two thirds of Field of Dreams. Got back home and finished up the laundry and ironing. Kevin, Andy, and I had our first porch session of the lease term. If we all smoked, I'm sure we would congregate out there once or twice daily. It was cool to enjoy a mild night and shoot the breeze about school and yos. Got a call from Werner and Brady. They were kicking it at the Rosebud in Grand Haven, while I get ready for another day of school. I was envious, but was happy to hear from the boys. It will be nice once we get on break, and also once my numerical qual is behind me. I swear, if I don't pass that, I'll be devastated. Tonight, leaving Lia's, I found that I had accidentally started my car with the remote starter while still inside the apartment. I was miffed by this, as the starter is often ineffective when I'm standing right next to the car. Also, the blinds were closed in the apartment, so that should have further hindered the ability of the remote (which was in my pocket) to work. The car used to be my mom's, but after hitting my second deer with the Sable Bomb, I had to make a trade in, and the time was right for me to inherit the Cutlass. I was thankful for it, to say the least. But the starter is something that I could do without. Its advantage is that I can (sometimes) start the car from inside on cold days and let the car wam up (and heat up the interior). The things that get me are when I start the car unknowingly and burn unnecessary fuel, or when I'm just trying to put my keys in my pocket and I restart the car and look like an idiot. This time, my car was roasting when I got in, so I figure it had been running awhile. But again, this is just annoying, and a problem that I can live with. Analysis test in three days. Studying begins tomorrow. This could be painful. Prayers are appreciated. Song Currently on WinAmp: "Living After Midnight" by Judas Priest. The funniest JP story I have is one told to me by little David Grillo. The lead singer is gay, and once he was asked about when he made it public that he was gay. The guy gave a response something to this effect. "Someone asked me what celebrity I would like to sleep with, and I said Howie Long." Make sure you say that with a British accent for optimal giggles. Maybe if he and Howie are in Mass. then they can tie the knot.
